Muhammad Younus Khan
I recently took TOEFL and scored 108. My section-wise score was: Reading, writing and listening: 28 each; speaking: 24.
Here I would like to share some tips and personal experience with you. Hope you can benefit from them.
The most important factor regarding TOEFL is the choosing appropriate study material. There are literally hundreds of books and other resources available for TOEFL prep, however, I personally suggest the following:
- Online course on TOEFL: this course is available at www.edx.org and can be availed free of cost. It gives you the format and some very precious strategies on how to respond to certain type of questions. I feel it is the best resource to familiarize yourself with the format of the test.
- ETS official guide to TOEFL
- Cambridge TOEFL ibt
- ETS official software including 3 full length tests
- Cambridge TOEFL software including 7 full length tests
Strategies: I personally feel that TOEFL is all about practicing more and more. Familiarise yourself with the actual test by taking as many practice tests as possible. This will help you identify your strengths and weaknesses. Try atleast two practice tests and see where you lack. Target your weaknesses untill they become your strengths.
Readings: Read academic stuff to improve your reading ability. Read articles on physics, chemistry, geology, geography, psychology and social sciences etc. from quality sources such as Nature, Scientific American, Science etc.
Listening: Listen to BBC learn english, BBC radio and watch documentaries and lectures on academic subjects.
Writing: Do practice. Write in a simple way. Dont use words which are not clear to you.
Speaking: Speak on topics given in books, record them if possible and then listen to them. Try not to make pronunciation and grammer mistakes. Even if you are not so fluent, try to speak in a way that people understand what you want to say.
Finally, the most important thing is to keep your focus on the test. Do not be distracted by the surroundings. Be confidant, specially in speaking. TOEFL is an easy test but the duration of the test can cause a lapse of concentration. Stay as natural as possible. You will do your best inshaAllah. Best of luck to all.
